Notes:
Dirty Three played on the first day of the Le Guess Who? festival in Tivoli Oude Gracht in Utrecht, after Do Make Say Think and Mono. Both other bands were also recorded, Mono was already shared on Dime and LMA, DMST will follow shortly as well. I had the pleasure of seeing Dirty Three twice already during their European tour, in Brussels in June and in Gent just 10 days earlier. Of all three shows this Utrecht set was my least favourite, for several reasons. First of all this set is about 30 minutes shorter, because it was part of a festival. Normally that alone would be reason enough to skip any festival, but with D3 and Mono playing on the same stage, this was not to be missed. Secondly the mix was much worse. As Warren explains, they had missed their train from London, so there was no time to properly soundcheck, what's included here in track 0 is basically all they had time for. And there were some issues with one of the monitors. The plop you'll hear after about six minutes into the soundcheck is when Warren tried to fix it (but it's roughly minimized in this recording not to leave you with any permanent damage to your ears). To compensate for the bad mix the volume was cranked up, too loud for my ears. And finally, I had been hoping for some other stories, e.g. the one about the valley of Pauls he told in Birmingham.
Because of the bad mix, this recording didn't turn out as nice as the other ones. And my mics also didn't really like the ceiling fans, causing some wind noise here and there. So if you just want a good sounding Dirty Three show, you might better look for the Gent or Brussels recordings. But despite all of this it is a great set, and it was a true pleasure to see them live again. It was also the last show of the tour, and the last one they will play for a while. Warren is now touring with Nick Cave and I've no clue what projects the other two will be doing.
