I went to this show along with the taper. This was the 1st time that
I had ever seen JA so I didn't know what to expect. They opened for
the Ramones, who I was basically there to see. The Syria Mosque Ballroom
was a large basement room in the Syria Mosque which was in the Oakland
section of Pittsburgh, PA. The acoustics of the Ballroom were very
different from those of the Mosque proper. Upstairs, the acoustics were
perfect ; downstairs, they were anything but. I don't think that JA had a sound
check and it showed. Here is a brief synopsis of the recording, good points
and bad...

Good points:

1) This is a COMPLETE recording of the show. I was there ; I know.

2) They only played 8 songs and, as you will hear, were pretty much
booed off the stage. This was unfair because they played with a fervor
and intensity that impressed me. If you are a fan of JA, I think you'll
love this performance. Very heavy, very intense and, in some parts,
very amusing. Check out Track 06.

3) There is no hiss in this recording and also no distortion. There
are no speed problems or other faults to detract from your enjoyment
of the show.

Bad points:

1) This is unfortunately probably the worst-sounding recording that
I've uploaded out of about 2 dozen uploads. That said, it's actually
quite listenable. There were 3 problems in the venue that night that
cause me to make that initial statement. First, the Ballroom's acoustics
were AWFUL. Second, the equipment that JA were forced to use was not the
best. Third, there was a group of assholes right next to us that began to
mock and insult the band early on. The place was packed and we could
NOT move away from this group of ~ 4 men and 1 woman. They thought that they
were being very droll and witty but they were really just exhibiting the
type of behavior that Pittsburgh has been trying to rid itself of for the
last 30 years. You'll hear it in all of its low-class splendor soon
enough. Pittsburghers know the syndrome : drunken yinzers...

2) As far as a description of the recording is concerned, here goes:
The drums are very audible. The bass is hard to pick out. The guitar
is pretty clear nearly all of the time. Perry's vocals are clearly
heard but his actual words are usually not. If you don't already know
the words to the songs, you won't understand very much. This is the
reason why I left LA Woman and Obvious as one track. I didn't know
where Obvious began so I left it as is. If you can tell me where
Obvious begins (in min. and sec. as in 4:48 of Track 03), please
let me know !

3) The opening track fades in and then hits maximum volume. This was
NOT done on purpose ; this is the way that the recording began.
The WM-F46 was an excellent analog unit which made great recordings
but it did have its little idiosyncrasies. This effect was one of them ;
it only did this every so often.

Well, that's about all that I can think of to say, so let's wrap this
up.

Finally, please don't buy, sell or convert this show to mp3 or
any other lossy format. Please seed this as long as you can.
Please trade this freely as it is virtually uncirculated.
This show will be a welcome addition to any Jane's Addiction
fan's collection. I will post a sample to help some of you
decide whether or not to get it. IMHO, this tape is NOT for
completists only. It's an historical document of a great
performance by Jane's Addiction in an acoustically poor venue
complicated by the verbal idiocy of rude morons. That's about
as accurate an assessment of the show as I can give. I found
the setlist online. It should be 100% correct. If it's not,
let me know. So, as Mr. Natural is so fond of saying, have fun,
don't freak out and enjoy the concert !
