Show Notes:
So, on an 'off day' from following The Magpie Salute all over Northern/Central California, I had an opportunity to catch Mavis Staples play a *free* show at a brewery in Petaluma. Steve Winwood was playing 12 miles north at 8 PM, the Mavis show was scheduled to run till 9, and ran a bit over, which pretty much nixed a two-fer...in a cruel irony, Mavis is opening for Steve I think tonight or tomorrow at the Hollywood Bowl.

Sadly, all the free tickets were "sold out". One in an initial wave, and a 2nd round gone on the 8th at noon (which I totally spaced out on trying to do).

So I arrived at 4 PM, and talked to the security guard...once I told him I was from Alaska, he said "Do you want to be my guest?" (always knew that tit job would come in handy someday).

And was I in for a hell of a treat (you folks as well).

Jade Jackson opened...she's hot in a sultry yet tiny way, and she played over an hour, though there was about a 10 minute rain delay in between all of that (it was fucking 100 degrees at 4 PM, then 'cooled off' to 80ish, then a ton of drops, then a bit of wind, then nothing).

On to the main event...I did sit (with people standing all around/in front of me) for the first 3 songs, then the ass and legs fell asleep, so it was *stand* for the rest of the show (wouldn't do the up/down thing to your ears, it sounded fine sitting, but much better standing).

I don't know much of Mavis' music, but it was a pretty special show...not but a song or two after I stood up...."We have a very special guest...Tom Waits...Tooooommmmmm Waaaiiiiits"...and a couple songs later Charlie Musselwhite came out and laid down some tasty harp.

The funniest thing of the night was that she introduced her guitar player...Rick Holmstrom...my brain went off...he grew up in the same motherfucking *neigborhood* (Vue Crest) that I did as a child. #smallworld. He was 7 years older than I, but his younger sisters, Marcie and Robyn, used to come over and swim in the pool when I was a kid.

I had the balls to run up to the lip of the stage and blow his mind post show with the "Steve from Vue Crest" thing, and we shared a quick few minutes of name dropping...

Ohhhh, and I can't forget "dancing man". Will have to try and upload my vids shot (posted on Facebook, and made them public, maybe those links would work). Between the pelvic thrusts and fairy-wing pirouettes, I could not stop laughing, and had to film him. Not included in the notes, but I will try and include them in the comments...tomorrow.

I highly recommend this place for a show...cool layout, intimate setting, good sound, only complaint was the overpriced food, and weak selection of it ($15 mini pizzas that looked sparse on the toppings...didn't go in to see if they had bar food), so I just held out for In N Out on the way home.

I can't think of a play off of "Mavis", or "Staples", so, if anything, you should *respect* Dennis for all he does for you fans of live music...

Throw him a shout out. Say thank you. Scratch your dog behind the ears. At least do something nice for someone/thing like he has done for you.

I almost feel as if I'm the one behind...(Fresno TMS show is uploading now), time to go fuck off now.

Time to go home. Two Melissa Etheridge shows in Anchorage I'm prolly gonna blow off ($90 for balcony? over 2 shows? fuck that shit), she's coming to Fairbanks.

Then another 10-12 shows coming up starting September 25th.

So, yeah, more to come...somehow, someway/
