05. Bells Ring

Total Time ::: 21:25

::: Extremely fine stereo AUD. Check samples while waiting for your bytes to blossom.
::: Warts: Essentially none. Few remainders of a few mike noises & a bit of AUD, but 'tis just dandy.
::: Benefit for Clinica Esperanza at the Mission Neighborhood Health Center, a San Francisco HIV/AIDS clinic.
::: This is the complete show (except ~4sec of AUD chatter deleted before #03). The band went on at 7:20 PM.
::: First Mazzy Star gig since 2013. The last concert they played was 2013-11-23 in Silver Spring, MD. On 2013-11-23 they did a live 1 song TV appearance on "Late Night With Jimmy Fallon".
::: Thanks to Hermesacat for the gig notification, the current band line-up, & the 2013 gig research.
::: REAL BIG thanks to Zongo for going, recording, writing his notes & sharing.

Recording Information ::: Sony PCM-M10, using internal mics on the recorder -> wav. (Technique: M10 which I held just below head level pointed toward the stage. I was standing slightly to stage right of center, about 15 feet from Hope Sandoval, with the center of the M10 pointed directly at her & the internal mics approximately aimed at the two PA speakers on either side of the stage area. Mic Sensitivity was set to "Hi" throughout with the limiter on. Most of the instruments were amped on the stage area, but also appeared to have mics from in front of the amps going to the board, so their sound was probably also reinforced through the PA).

Remastering 2017-12-01 ::: wav -> Audacity [manual one-at-a-time bump, pop & click repairs, volume adjustments, clapping & yelling alleviation, NO equalisation or noise reduction] -> CD Wave (track splits) -> flacs (Trader's Little Helper) -> yr ears. First uploaded 2017-12-01.

Line-up ::: Hope Sandoval - vocals // Dave Roback - acoustic guitar & electric guitars // Suki Ewers - keyboards, acoustic guitar on #05 // Josh Yenne - pedal steel guitar // Paul Mitchell - electric bass, violin (#05) // Colm O'Ciosoig - drums.

Nothing here ever commercially released to my knowledge. If I'm wrong, please advise & I'll take the offending trax offline.

DimeTravel 340 ::: Thanks again to the original taper, Zongo! ::: Corrections welcome :::

Taper notes: The event was very very nice, in an art gallery, free and with appetizers & drinks. The space was about 200 feet long by 100 feet by about 30 feet high, with large pieces of painted art on all the walls, and a nice display of the masks made by the patients. There were about 150 people there, most of whom seemed to be there for the clinic rather than for the music, although they certainly enjoyed the music when it happened. There was an excellent diversity of people, and many were dressed very nicely, even elegantly in many cases. As you came to the building you were ushered up a side path and then into the hall by someone opening the door for you, and inside you were greeted by the Clinica staff, who were totally welcoming and friendly. It sort of seemed like maybe an invitation event, as we were asked if we were invited when we came in, and we responded "sort of" which seemed good enough. Mazzy Star played in one corner of the room. The space was pretty echoey, with concrete walls and ceilings and wooden floor, but the sound was pretty good where I was standing, with decent balance of the instruments.

From the event announcement from Facebook: "Where stigma ends, wellness begins. Join ClĂnica Esperanza on the eve of World AIDS Day for a night of remembrance and celebration. Handmade masks created by patients, staff, and community members will be on display and available for purchase. Appetizers and drinks will be served. We are thrilled to announce an intimate performance by Mazzy Star. Free of cost."

Once again, we are treated to the shimmering sounds of Mazzy Star - all too short, but very sweet sounds. When's someone going to surface a tape of that Batofar gig on the Seine? That was a freakin' blast. Listen, enjoy, show appreciation, share, give, spread peace. Yrs truly, Knees
