Notes - The best Nick Cave show I have ever seen, and I have seen over 40 of them. I even got in to see the sound check.

Sound check wasnt my best recording - but I have included it here for those that are interested. Jim Sclavunos does the inital vocals on Papa Wont leave you Henry !!

Band and Nick were on fire, Nick had heaps of crowd banter (some left in the edit)- he was a complete entertianer. Great set list, sound and venue, some mild crowd noise/chatter and occassional wind artifact on the mics (outdoor venue). Some funny moments between Nick with the crowd/security. Ran out of SD card space at the end (partial Stagger Lee). What a show - blew my mind.

Enjoy

THE mood was strangely evangelical when Australia's most eccentric frontman, Nick Cave, captivated his legion of fans in an unforgettable evening last night.
Taking the stage in a suit, with hair slicked back and a heavy black moustache, Cave was as much a storyteller, a poet, a comedian and a thespian as he was a powerful vocalist.

As his smooth yet robust voice travelled through the microphone for the first time, the singer had the full attention of his audience, and would later summon them to absorb his music the same way a preacher entrances his parishioners.

When Cave opened the show with Hold On To Yourself it was clear the night would be one to remember.

From there the band launched straight into the show with the title track from last year’s Dig Lazarus Dig!!! album.

But no more than 30 seconds into the song, Cave halted the band and turned his attention to the crowd.

“Hold it, hold it; what the f**k are you guys doing there,” he said as he reached into the crowd.

Every neck in the amphitheatre was craned to see what the fuss was all about, then, in almost a fatherly tone, Cave said: “leave him alone!”.

Cave was addressing the front of stage security who were trying to pull somebody out of the crowd.

When the situation settled and Cave’s instructions had been followed, the singer lightened the mood by defending the concert-goer with the statement that “he’s dancing”, before starting where he left off with Dig Lazarus Dig!!!

The Weeping Song, aptly introduced by Cave through the lyric “but we won’t be weeping long”, was one highlight of the show.

Seeing the artist live only emphasises the poetry in his song lyrics, which come alive through his powerful compositions and spoken word theatrics.

Members of the crowd became characters in his songs as he pointed to the “blonde haired girl” and “the trouble-maker” in the front row.

Now 15 years since its release, Red Right Hand was a hit with the crowd.

Almost everybody knew the words and those who had been silent all night suddenly found their voices for the song.

Midnight Man and Nature Boy also made it onto the set list, and Cave invited the crowd to sing along to Into My Arms, “because f**k knows I can’t sing”.

The singer had the crowd keeping up to Moonland with a fast clap before The Mercy Seat became yet another highlight of the evening.

Punching his arms into the air, to the front and raising his palms to the sky, Cave had the crowd completely absorbed.

Those who weren’t swinging their heads back and forth or swinging their arms to the side were silent, in awe of what they were seeing.

We Call Upon The Author set the tempo high again in an amazing example of storytelling through music, showing the stereotypical mannerisms of a preacher in doing so.

The band played Papa Won’t Leave You, Henry before closing the show with a wave “bye bye”.

Some were initially doubtful that Cave would return for an encore, but perhaps the many minutes of applause was enough to entice him back to the spotlight.

The Lyre of Orpheus and The Ship Song made it onto the encore in the show which was the last in Cave’s world tour.

Cave shows pure brilliance in every aspect of his art, and there is no doubt those who have witnessed his show feel privileged to have done so.
