Been looking forward to these shows from the time they were announced. I
planned on arriving early to meet up with some folks I see at all the Ben
Harper shows who are part of his unofficial "fan club". They all seem to
know who I am through my recordings. Everyone was excited for the show
and it was a beautiful day in SF. I knew they sometimes got in early for
soundcheck and usually I avoid such opportunities to keep the daspy low
profile but this time I went for it. I had my gear and they did the security
thing which wasn't a big deal. Inside there were about 20 of us for the
soundcheck which was very cool. The highlight was the Led Zeppelin cover
When The Levee Breaks. I had my gear but didn't try to rig up abnd record.
That was hard but didn't want to cross the line. There were some sound
issues so while they replaced a mic Ben came down and talked to everyone.
That was a great moment to experience. He was given a real cool retro
Chicago Bulls Harper jersey so if anyone sees him wear it for any Chicago
gig pictures required. After soundcheck we all went outside and reclaimed
our spot up front. There was a couple from France who though they were up
front but they didn't have tickets. We directed them to box office window
and they waited there. I said there would be 2 tickets at box office. Soon
they came back and said they had the only 2 tickets from box office. Doors
opened and I got past security a second time. Ben and Charlie came on about
9:20 and played a really good set. Definitely felt like they were getting
their sea legs so the show was more deliberate than some. A lot of the music
was from the new album which had just been dropped. Serious blues and it was
great. After about an hour and five minutes the set ended. Still no When the
Levee Breaks so anticipated it for the encore. They came back out for almost
40 minutes and played what could have been called a second set. I enjoyed
every last song and made my way home listening to a great show and really nice
recording. I figured on doing it again the next day and was waiting for the
Levee to break.
