WHAT ??

Snakefinger ?

The Residents' favorite guitar player ?

SNAKEFINGER (Philip Charles Lithman) was a long time friend and collaborator with The Residents
and his brilliant and distinctive guitar and violin work can be heard on many of their major
releases. In turn The Residents played on and produced his first recordings for Ralph Records.
After the initial success of his "The Spot" single many great albums were to follow, "Chewing
Hides The Sound"," "A Manual Of Errors," "Greener Postures," he was also a staple with The
Clubfoot Orchestra, and I think that some of the players on this LP hailed from Clubfoot as
well. He died 1987 of a fatal heart attack at age 38 while touring Europe with his band
The Vestal Virgins on the same day that a single was released from his "Night Of Desirable
Objects" album. It was called "There's No Justice In Life."

MUST BE: Category -> Avantgarde

NO -> BLUES...

BLUES ????

Yepp, it's true...and it was one of the best,
if NOT THE BEST BLUES BAND in the 1980ies...

INCLUDED IN THIS TRULY FANTASTIC BAND WITH (AMONG OTHER STUNNING MUSICIANS...):

Stephen Mackay - saxophone player for The Stooges, Iggy Pop, Violent Femmes, Commander Cody...

Eric Drew Feldman - worked with Captain Beefheart, Pixies, P.J. Harvey, Pere Ubu, and Frank Black...

Our dear friend Fabio (38f) upped a complete audience recording of one of those
rare shows - Odissea 2001, Milano, Italy, December 7th 1983 - from his masters on
November 29, 2006, and it was removed after 253 days from DIME on August 9, 2007.

That's what he wrote about this concert, back then:

This show is something marvelous...A fantastic blues show, just pure blues,
i would say unique, considering that Snakefinger used to mix blues with
avant-garde stuffs. The recording is excellent, an audience tape that sounds
like a soundboard....my advice is that here you have something you cannot
loose, a real unusual show for Snakefinger....

Last year, on July 19th, 2009, fellow DIMEr "jschmoe" upped a soundboard-recording
from the same show (did anyone check both recordings ? I missed Fabio's in 2006...).

It's still alive:
Torrent #258285 Snakefinger - 1983-12-07 Milan, Italy (HISTORY OF THE BLUES TOUR)
http://www.dimeadozen.org/torrents-details.php?id=258285

Here is what he wrote:

The "Snakefinger's History Of The Blues, Pts. 1 & 2" tour was a total change-up.
He felt it was time for some "music from the heart", as a contrast to the disco
and electronic music of the day. The show was literally a step through time, from
the roots of blues on up through to the sixties.
NONE of the tunes from his usual repertoire are present here - it's all blues.
As I understand it, "Pt. 1" was just Snakefinger on guitar or piano;
"Pt. 2" was with a full band.

This show had a brief "Pt. 1" set & a nice long "Pt. 2".
If you're familiar with the official LP from this tour, you can see there's many
other tunes here that couldn't fit on one LP.
And so you're probably in for a fine, fine listening session indeed.

This is the one show I have from this tour which WASN'T a venue used for the official
LP, so it did not need any removals / you get it all straight up.

Snakey certainly wasn't an original bluesman, but you sure can tell he
had it in his heart. And this was a great performance.

About the "official LP from this tour":

"Snakefinger's History Of The Blues" - LIVE IN EUROPE
(see photo in the comment section)

This long out-of print record was originally released 1984 in West Germany on Rough Trade
Records (#24, Stereo). The late great SNAKEFINGER at his best, doing what he really knows
best, Blues, bad ass Blues, rockin' Blues, boogie down Blues, with a twist of Jazz !!!!
It was recorded live around Europe in Fall/Winter 1983, with Snakefinger and a band that included
a three-piece horn section, performing historically faithful renditions of classic blues material
originally performed by Muddy Waters, Bobby Blue Bland, Albert, Freddie, and BB King, etc.

Both, the tour and live recording from 'Snakefinger's History of The Blues' showcased
Lithman and his touring back-up group, "The Vestal Virgins" range of playing skills.

Crank up the volume and let the big brass bluesband hit you! Then it's more than alright
and makes you wanna dance no matter how alone you may be. It happened to me on "You Upset
me Baby", and with "Crosscut Saw". A footstamping delight at it's best, and well compared
with Neil Young & The Bluenotes "This Note's for You", of 1988...

THE ALBUM WAS COMPLETELY RECORDED IN GERMANY DURING THIS TOUR (check the interview track #13)...

About this concert:

From an old tape trade, with all the remaining infos after >26 years provided...

A radio broadcast excerpt of the Vienna concert with a rare Mr. Lithman interview.
All the seemingly strange cuts at the beginning and end of this interview had been
broadcasted the same way...it's all on tape (photo included in the torrent), i just
moved this interview from start to end, AFTER the music. As there is no audience
recording of this show (or a pre-FM...that would be some kind of "holy grail" for
Snakefinger- & real blues-fans !), i cannot confirm the correct running order of the
songs THIS NIGHT...this torrent shows the same order as it was BROADCASTED early 1984.
You'll hear also some strange applause-cossfades and a bit extra-hiss during the talking
and interview - but it's not very distracting and DOESN'T SHORTEN THE INCREDIBLE QUALITY !

No further story to tell, except it was another trade with "RG"
(famous for, inter alia, his Jimi Hendrix recordings...) and
his great group of nice and truly friendy maniacs...read more
about the "New Advanced Vienna Taper Section" here:

The Residents' favorite guitar player, the great Philip Lithman brought unorthodox techniques
and a wicked sense of humor to the fractured, playful post-punk the group laid out for him.
He was not only a wildly inventive and original guitarist but a master of many styles. Picking,
bottleneck, blues, rock, jazz and could play practically anything with strings, violin, mandolin
etc. to a high degree. It was someone witnessing his violin playing who dubbed him “Snakefinger”
as his hands were moving so fast.

"English avant-guitarist Philip Charles Lithman, aka Snakefinger, began an association with
the Residents in 1969, before the group even had that name. The Residents co-produced his two
albums with Snakefinger. Chewing Hides Sound from 1979 includes a cover of Kraftwerk's "The Model."
This is very appropriate because both groups relied heavily on mechanical, angular rhythms and
lyrics loaded with more visual metaphor than meaning, like "Jesus Was a Leprechaun." This is
the peculiar and unique material of a cult guitarist extraordinaire. Each song is a quirky
island in a sea of sonic oddity. "Here Comes the Bums" is hip and cool while "Who Is the Culprit
and Who Is the Victim?" is tense and neurotic. A listen to this album forces consideration of
his immense contribution to the Residents' sound."
- Tom Schulte

Biography
Philip Lithman led a schizophrenic career, trying to make his way out of obscurity into the light
of mainstream success, but then found a living as a valued sideman to the most obscure pop group
of the '70s and '80s: the Residents. His dramatic, slanted runs up the fretboard have its antecedents
in the British blues scene and art rock, most particularly Robert Fripp and Fred Frith (the latter
also lending guitar to Residents recordings); his fingerwork earned him the nickname "Snakefinger."
In the end, he died (suddenly, of a heart attack) while in limbo: not weird enough for the Residents,
not normal enough for chart success or critical recognition.

Born in London, England, in 1949, Lithman was coming of age in the psychedelic scene, but picked up
the more menacing vibe that was permeating the last two years of that decade. In 1971, a 22-year-old
Lithman came to San Francisco and met up with a strange group of art terrorists that would become
the Residents. He accompanied the group for their two live appearances, as well as raising hell on
live radio, playing violin in a screeching, free jazz joke. People dug it, but Lithman returned to
England the following year, playing on two albums in the band Chilli Willi and the Red Hot Peppers
with his friend Martin Stone (two of the members, Nick Lowe and Pete Thomas, would go on to fame
working with Elvis Costello). When the group disbanded, Lithman returned to America, and settled in
Los Angeles, where he shopped around demos for two years, trying to break into the mainstream rock
scene in the style of the Eagles, Jackson Browne, and other soft rock standbys. Both Warner Bros.
and RCA rejected him. In 1978, he returned to San Francisco and in the middle of shopping around
another demo, reunited with his old friends, the Residents. The college-age pranksters had grown
into a bizarre band with a cult following and their own label and now had a desire to add other
artists to their label's roster - Snakefinger had returned. For two years, the Residents co-wrote
and produced two Snakefinger albums (Chewing Hides the Sound and Greener Postures), a single "The
Spot," and featured him on their albums Duck Stab and The Commercial Album. He also seared the ears
with his unforgettable solo on their cover of "Satisfaction" - it needs to be heard to be believed.
The solo albums, while a critical success (Chewing received a "classic" rating in the 1983 Rolling
Stone Record Guide), seemed more about the Residents than Snakefinger: the similar demented pop of
Duck Stab, the singsong lyrics, the weird and cool imagery. Given a chance, Lithman's Brit Rock
purisms would leak out; in 1983 he toured, playing blues covers. In the early '80s, while the
Residents were engulfed in touring, he formed a band, the Vestal Virgins, with members of Pere Ubu
and assorted Bay Area groups, and recorded a third album, Manual of Errors. Here was a breakthrough -
with only a few songs co-written with the Residents, Lithman could make it as a true solo artist.
In 1985-1986, Lithman returned to play a world tour with the Residents, documented on at least
three releases as the 13th Anniversary Tour. This is a terrific example of Snakefinger's work -
delicate slide work, menacing, distortion filled guitar (often in the same song). That year also
saw the release of his most mature work to date: Night of Desireable Objects, recorded with the
Vestal Virgins. The eclectic album represented the varying influences at work in Lithman's career,
from Nino Rota and Miles Davis to folk and art pop. The Virgins hit the road for a support tour.
On July 1, 1987, before a concert in Linz, Austria, Lithman suffered a fatal heart attack.
The Residents, who were scheduled to use Lithman on their upcoming God in Three Persons album,
composed music for his funeral (later released on Snakey Wake). Since 1987, the Residents have
kept Lithman's memory alive through re-releases of his Ralph Records material, including a
B-sides collection.

Eric Drew Feldman (worked with Captain Beefheart, Pixies, P.J. Harvey, Pere Ubu, and Frank Black)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eric_Drew_Feldman
http://www.myspace.com/ericdrewfeldman

Eric Drew Feldman aka Black Jew Kitabu
As a young teenager Feldman had visited the Magic Band at the 'Trout' house in Woodlands Hills. In
1976 he was to join the band to play keyboards, accordion and bass after Don had sacked John Thomas
for playing on the second Mallard album.
After the demise of the Magic Band Feldman has been in demand as a sideman and as a producer, playing
with Pere Ubu, Snakefinger, Polly Harvey to name only a few.
He has regularly toured as part of Polly Harvey's band (playing bass and keyboards). In 2003 he was
touring as part of the Residents band on their 'Demons Dance Alone' tour.
A band called 'kNIFE & fORK' is EDF's latest project - see below for more about this - has toured
as support for P J Harvey.

Richard Marriott

http://www.richardmarriott.com/index.html

Richard Marriott has been active as a composer, performer, and instrument builder for over thirty
years. He has composed extensively for film, television, dance, theater, opera, installations and
video games, encompassing styles ranging from the stridently avant garde to the commercial mainstream.
He is the founder and artistic director of the Club Foot Orchestra, the premiere ensemble for live
music performance with silent films. His new group, Ensemble Lumiere New York, was recently unveiled
at the Rubin Museum His compositions are available on the Amour Fou label.

With the birth of his first child, Jacques in 1980, he enrolls in a program teaching electronic
technolgy, thinking he'd land a job at HP (or something). But fate lead him instead to Serge Modular,
a synthesizer company on Haight St in San Francisco. With a bit of prodding by Serge Tchrepnin and
Robin Whittle, he develops a way to drive a Casio keyboard with the control voltages of his Serge system.
The Voltage Controlled Casio was sold to The Residents (they bought 3!) Throbbing Gristle, Tuxedo Moon,
Don Preston, John Adams and many others. It was (and still is) capable of an astonishing range of timbre!

Began living above the Club Foot, a performance art nightclub. During this time, joined Snakefinger's
Band and formed Club Foot Orchestra. During Snakefinger's Europe tour in 1983 (38 cities) played trombone,
tenor sax and trumpet. Returning to San Francisco, he writes some of the most unlikely "club" music ever.
Almost totally instrumental, it juxtaposes atonal funk, Rota-esque waltzes and Red Army choruses with
virtuosic canons in 11/8 time. More about this on the Club Foot Orchestra site.

Stephen Mackay

http://www.myspace.com/saxmanmackay

Steve Mackay is an American tenor saxophone player, best known for his participation on The Stooges'
second album Fun House. Mackay was familiar to The Stooges from his work in Detroit's avant-rock pioneers,
Carnal Kitchen. He was recruited by lead singer Iggy Pop, two days before the Stooges left Detroit for Los
Angeles to record the album, after having sat in with the band several times. Mackay toured with the group
throughout 1970 but parted company with the Stooges in October 1970.

For the next ten years, Mackay played with a cross-section of underground musicians: Violent Femmes, Snakefinger, Commander Cody, Smegma, Zu, Andre Williams, The Moonlighters, Clubfoot Orchestra, and a
handful of other efforts (including Van Rozay from San Jose) continued into the late 1980s. As the 1990s
approached, Mackay's profile gradually lowered as he took up residence near San Francisco and began work
as an electrician.

Mackay rejoined The Stooges in 2003 when they played their first show in twenty nine years at the
Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, and he has performed with them ever since.

Mackay has also appeared at recent live shows by the Violent Femmes, with whom he has played off and
on since appearing on their albums Hallowed Ground and The Blind Leading the Naked.

Punk Globe: You began playing l the late Snake Finger. Phillip was such a nice guy m band White Trash
Debutantes recently had his daughter Lani's band open for us. Do you know Lani? You also played with
Clubfoot Orchestra and Violent Femmes . How did you enjoy that?
S.M.: In 1982 I began working with Snakefinger , with His History Of The Blues Parts 1 and 2, leading
a 3 piece horn section. We played a few gigs in the Bay Area before we finally went on our European tour
in late '83 to record a live LP of our shows for Rough Trade Deutschland, what a great man to work for
and with! I miss him terribly even now, but am fortunate to have met Lani Lithman and her Mom Freddi
through the Violent Femmes, and have even sat in with Lani's band Girls With Guns! My wife Patricia and
I have been friends with them for several years.
I was invited to join Clubfoot Orchestra when they were forming but decided to give Carnal Kitchen
(with ex Annie) a go... Good friends with a few of them, including my section partners from Snakefinger...

If the Bay Area had a house band, its name would be J. Raoul Brody
- Contra Costa Times

rent-a-legend
- East Bay Express

Raoul is a marvelous pianist (he has to be on Erle's collapsing grand) and a bright, mellow comic.
- Philip Elwood, SF Examiner

Another bright spot is Music Director Joshua Raoul Brody, who plays keyboards along with the show,
complete with great sound effects and timely tunes. I was amazed at how he could play songs on the
spot that were directly related to the action on stage. A good improv show needs a guy like Brody
to keep it moving along and Joshua was magnificent.
