I knew someone who was in a band that frequently opened for national headliners at this club. Since he knew the owner, he was able to tape the show from the soundboard. He dubbed a copy for me on cassette, which I just transferred to CD so many years later. For a soundboard, this is an A- mainly because the mix is not perfect. The guitars are a bit low because the amps were loud enough to fill the room, so they did not need to run the guitars through the PA at a high level. Still, this sounds really nice. A song or two are missing because the PA blew out during “Ode”, and the tape wasn’t re-started immediately after they resolved the problem. I know that “Cartoon” and part of “Closer to the Stars” are missing, but I do not recall any other songs that were played while the tape was not running.

I followed the band for a week on this tour and this was the first show of my run. “Long Way Home” was a favorite of mine at the time, so I requested it each night. They played it every time because Dan Murphy decides which songs they will play, and he was always eager to play one of his. You can hear me request it, and Dan immediately agrees. Another highlight of the show is “Two Tickets to Paradise” followed by Dan telling a funny story about the song. There are a few other seldom played covers and originals. A friend of mine challenged Pirner to a pinball game after the show, knowing that he liked to play. My friend, not being good at all, almost immediately had his first ball to drop through the flippers. Pirner looked at him and said, “Man, you suck!”
