Notes;
The story behind these tapes.
I purchased my first Sony D3 tape recorder only 2 weeks prior to this festival and wasn’t comfortable enough yet to tape big outdoor festivals. All experience I had to date then was taping in small to medium sized indoor venues with a cheap recorder. Having said that, I was keen as the festival included all the bands I was interested in.
In 1993, I changed to DAT equipment and it was not until aother few years later that I met the taper at a concert. We had a chat and figured out we had a lot in common. Let alone the huge tape library we had both accumulated by then. Both FB and myself were members of the DAT Heads trading group, a semi elite circle of people who invested their cash in (stand alone) DAT recorders, digital cables and good music.
The 1990 Pukkelpop tapes are however all recorded on analogue 2 track Maxell II Chrome cassette tapes and a Sony D8 cassette recorder. A Sony shotgun microphone from the 9 Series was used to capture the live sound.
The taper, my good German Friend FB from Wuppertal, later allowed me to borrow his master tapes for DAT conversion. We would often exchange our DAT tapes to find out who ended up with the best sounding tape. You will be surprised that even though we DAT taped on the same equipment and often with the same brand microphone, and standing within 2 meters from each other, tapes could end up sounding completely different!
The bands taped on that hot 26th August 1990 festival were: Mudhoney (opening act), Beasts Of Bourdon (last minute replacement for The Creeps), Rollins Band (Henry screaming his lungs out in the late hot afternoon), Cramps (I was hooked on this band from this show onwards and would never mis/ tape a Dutch concert in years to come) and last but not least, Nick Cave (who closed the festival).
Here you go, a unique collection of a fantastic festival line up. The sound quality on all these tapes is very good. Enjoy!
