SOURCE / LINEAGE

Stereo AUD master to Maxell METAL tape (except * - first 4 tracks Stereo AUD at least 1st Gen tape)

Borrowed mics > Borrowed Sony WM-D6C > Master METAL tape > Computer WAV > Cool Edit Pro 2000 > TLH v2.4.1 > FLAC 8 > DIME > you
I don't have the specific model for the mics, but the buddy from which I borrowed the gear (thanks K!) said they cost approx. US$500.
Mics were physically separate left / right channel lines which fed back to a single stereo line into the deck.
The left / right lines were either pinned over each shoulder facing stage, or pinned to left/right sides under an open-holed baseball cap.
I originally mastered this 2000-10-15 but lost the original WAVs in a hard disk crash.

I was nasty sick this day & "calling ralph" in the john when the show started / missed the intro & first 4 songs navigating back thru the crowd to our spot.
A fellow fan working at a local record store (thx Dave!) hooked me up with a dub of those 4 tracks from his friend's recording, but his tape didn't have the eulogy.
This source for those 4 must be at least a gen or perhaps two from that recorder's source (& hissy as a result); it's stereo but limited separation.
The remainder of the show here comes from my recording, which had a lot more highs, bass & clarity; excerpts from both will be attached.

The input to this source came from the 2000 final mastered CDR set, extracted via EAC / reports included.
I think the only thing I did at that time on the computer was place track marks before each piece.
I see some red peak clipping during some of the claps & a super-deep bass part near the start of Act Two, none of that was cleaned up here.
This FLAC fileset comes from the EAC extracts, which did not originally need SBE corrections.
After the DIME edit (see below), the Disc 2 fileset did need a SBE fix & that was done.
Disc 1 simply needed the deletion of the master's track 1 (master already faded out track 1 / faded in track 2) and was ok after that.
Disc 2 has the removal of the master's tracks 1/2 and all but a little crowd noise off the end of track 3 (which is now the lead-in to the next track).
Having yanked the initial tracks off each disc, they were then properly renumbered afterwards.
The EAC reports are nowheres in sync with all these changes, & remain just to demonstrate clean extraction from my master discs.

I did hear a tiny tic just at the beginning of D2-05, this was mastered b4 I figured out Cool Edit's previous/next zero mark to prevent that.
I'd thought the SBE fix would correct this, but no; there may be another 1 or 2 like that around those Commercial Album tracks.
A small price to pay for what is a nice show beyond that.

This up is a "DIME edit" from what I'd normally shared of this show with folks (tho you are not missing anything of real concern).
The full source included a mini-clip of the audio when they aired the Earth Vs. The Flying Saucers video - not ok for DIME, was on a 7".
It also included 11 minutes worth of the intermission music aired between Act One and Act Two - again not ok for DIME.
The latter was 3 snippets from "For Elsie" later released in 1987 (hey I got to hear some of it repeatedly a full year before most of you!).
No matter, the only thing missing from the "show proper" is that Eyeball Eulogy intro & even that's just talking.

NOTES

As this is as close to the original master as possible & isn't too bad to start with, please DON'T remaster and repost it.

No seats for us, SRO as all the tables were taken; we set up camp along the right side wall 1/4th of the way back from the stage.
The right wall had a 4-5-6" ledge raised up about 4 feet off the floor; I sat teetering on that ledge with 1 buttcheek on it throughout the show.
This position had me & the mics a few feet over everyone standing or at tables, with a direct view line to the speakers on the sides of the stage.
That helped achieve a nice sound for the music, but also picked up some of the idle chatter from those standing & a lot of whistles.
I really love the sound for this (gotta love metal tapes), but you can decide. My ass pain = your audio gain. All worth it in "the end".

(I have no further details about the source for those first 4 songs; just glad to have 'em to complete the show.)
(Someone does say "I can't see anything", so I'd guess they were on the floor at tables.)

Yes, this is the venue they turned into a strip bar shortly after this show.
If general business was bad, well, on this night they certainly had no problem filling the place up.
Quite a sight: hippies & skinheads & goths all smiling / bobbing their heads / doing funny dances in front of the stage.

There's an edit right in the beginning & again during Act One from the alt source to mine; the entire remainder of Act One is unedited & fades out.
And there's an edit during Act Two for a new tape between Crow II and The Big Bubble - the show had a convenient pause there, so no music is missed.
And unlike many of my tapes, I did edit out a bunch of the clapping before the encore & fade out at the end.

Speaking of... I clap. Sorry. At least there's no talking from me or the people I was there with.

I know I gave out many, many copies of the original edit to both trader friends & other Residents fans.
This is probably its first time up here on DIME, and now it's certainly as close to the source as can be, and DIME friendly too.
Crank it up and ENJOY! it as I have, and share it so others can hear it.

Filenames have numbers on the end that are the TIMES (ex. - "...-359" is 3min59sec long).

Nowadays I try to avoid the "+" in names, because it causes some folks problems; D1-06 and D2-07 have it, so rename it if you're one of them.

I mark the start of tracks when the music or count-in begins, not the talking about it before it starts.
