SCOTT SIMPSON'S ACCOUNT HE WROTE UP:

"Violent Femmes (feat. The Horns of Dilemma) Wollman Auditorium, Columbia University
15 Nov 84

Oh what a night, mid November back in ’84.

Final semester of film school was nearing its end, and the Femmes had just released their
second album.

Took my 20 lb battery powered Yamaha tape deck and borrowed some mics from the equipment
room and went down to Wollman Auditorium in Ferris Booth Hall at 114th Street. Place is
now confined to the dustbin of memories.

Walked in lugging 20 pounds of recording equipment; convinced security I wasn’t there to
record the show and we’re off.

The Femmes were still virtually unknown and the place never came close to filling up.
I set the equipment on a folding chair on a cushion about five feet in front of center of
the riser and let her roll.

Here’s the thing. After the show we rushed home because one of our classmates was featured
on David Letterman that night.

So the master ended up in the vault with only a Nov 84 date. Never circulated. Never
really played for personal enjoyment.

But the Google gods finally smiled.

date of concert was 15 Nov 84.

Sound is likely the best you’ll ever hear from this era. I call it the End of Cole tape for
the Femmes. Even though the room was cavernous and sounded like a gym, professional
recording equipment five feet from the riser. It’s a rare gem. Minimal turning down during
applause and individual hand claps were turned down throughout with audacity. Very sensitive
mics picked up those noises and they recorded quite loud.

Transfer was remarkably close to final level. After claps were removed, it only took a .9
increase to have the entire show peak at -0.8. This entire endeavor really could not have
turned out any better.
